The story of painter Zao Wou-Ki, a child of the 20th century whose first name means "without limits", is an eventful one. Born in Beijing in 1921 into a wealthy banking family, he spent his childhood in the Shanghai of the concessions. Inspired as a child by the Impressionists, Cubists and Fauvists, Zao Wou-Ki later turned to purely abstract painting. A painter of light and silence, of emptiness and "the infinite diversity of a blue in the tiny reflection of a leaf on water". In 1948, while studying in Paris, he met those who were to become his friends and with whom he formed the "Second Paris School".
A session introduced by Gilles Chazal, exhibition curator, Conservateur général du Patrimoine, Honorary Director of the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris.
