A social experiment-turned-baroque musical in a Vienna exhibition space, where the boundaries between body and world dissolve in a delirious and darkly funny mirror image of civilisation itself.
In 2019, a social experiment took place at Kunsthalle Wien. In a set composed of massive flamingo blocks, stacked in pyramids and monumental structures – and complete with both prison and its own nightclub! – artist Liam Gillick and Austrian performance group Gelitin led a radical, improvised collective project that played out a series of crises leading up to an inevitable collapse. A miniature civilization, only without recognizable rules, and with a baroque corporeality in opposition to the oppressive delineation of Self and Other that defines the world as we know it – until now, at least. Bare bottoms and laser beams, masks and a house band: ‘Stinking Dawn’ documents this darkly humorous and transgressive experiment, but as a musical. An unruly, cinematic work in its own right – and a cinematic experience unlike any other.
