A film about Władysław Kozakiewicz, the great pole-vaulter, gold medallist of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. He has come down in history for famously making an obscene arm gesture that became a symbol of opposition to the communist regime for millions of Polish people. We follow the story of an ordinary boy from the countryside who, despite a tough childhood, climbed the athletic ladder all the way to the top. After giving the Moscow stadium “the Kozakiewicz gesture”, this multiple national champion and record holder, world record holder and 23-times Polish representative became a victim of the ruthless political system of the time. The Soviet ambassador demanded that his medal be revoked, his record annulled and that he be disqualified for life for “offending the Soviet nation”. Persecuted, cut off from income, travel and participation in sports events, Kozakiewicz decided to leave for Germany, and thus became a “traitor”… Featuring lots of unique archival footage, this is the story of a bitter success that couldn’t be boasted about for years. A universal tale about the price and nature of success.
