Eleanor suddenly threw herself into the river when she was walking along the street, but was saved. After this attempted suicide, she disappeared from her husband’s life.
With the story going on like this, the trigger behind all of this was emerging. Their son died. Eleanor was sad and even sadder to see her husband not affected, carrying on with his normal life. After six months’ endurance, El chose to commit suicide as an outcry against that. As a consequence, there showed up a divergence between their lives.
”He went soft. I stayed hard. That was that.” A professor of El once said like this as a conclusion of her life with her husband. It went well for El and Conor as well. Conor seemed soft while El seemed to stay hard.
Faced with their son’s death, Conor chose to continue with his normal life, putting away all the staff that used to belong to their son and enjoying Chinese food. When his restaurant nearly broke down, he chose to work in his father’s restaurant although he used to hate his father for his cruelty to his mother. But was Conor not sad about his son’s death at all? Not really. He asked his father never to talk about this. He was trying to avoid this huge sorrow. He was trying to bury them all in his deep memory. Conor is just the sort of guy, like his father who had three girlfriends after divorce. This kind of people always know how to survive and how to carry on with their lives.
Meanwhile, Eleanor preferred to leave herself grieving for her son’s death. Moreover, she wished her husband should show the equal sadness as hers. Maybe inherited from her mother who was a musician and a French, Eleanor presents more sensibility. They’re usually slower to walk out of the shadows.
In this way, I have to say El may be the soft one while Conor stays hard. Indulging oneself in the past is not necessarily wise. Life goes on without waiting. So at the end of the movie, in a dark night, Conor was strolling in the park, followed by Eleanor at a distance. They didn’t meet or greet. They seemed not to notice each other. This is an opening ending. But in my opinion, Conor walking ahead while Eleanor following afterwards means after all of this, Conor has already lived an advanced life than El. He kept up with the pace of life while El resumed her essay. They still loved each other but they were in a different time and space.
