The Truman Show

The Truman Show (1998) reveals the lifetime of Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), whose daily life has been recorded by over 5,000 cameras without knowing by him for almost 30 years and broadcast to the whole world. He has been living in a fake world knowing as Seahaven, which is just a huge studio created by the director Christof. Gradually Truman finds out the strangeness around him and plans to sneak out and explore this world.
This movie is so unusual and so indescribable. It makes you think your own life carefully. Also it offers you a lot of ways to assess your life. It gave me lots of significant thinking of one’s life. First, when you are happy, are you really feeling like the way you feel? Truman was happy at the beginning because he was illiterate. He had a family, a nice job, and good neighbors. His life pretty much was ordinary as a normal person’s life. However, when he was finally stepping out of the Seahaven and proclaiming that “in case I don't see ya-good afternoon, good evening, and good night,” he was happier because he went into a new life. So happiness results from either way: the way of being illiterate or the way of being explorative.
Secondly, what if your life was watched by millions of audience in “another” world? Like Truman, you might not notice the facts at the beginning. You were locked inside the Seahaven and just didn’t know the truth because you had no eyes on it. How are you going to identify yourself? I think similar stage comes in everyone’s life at the point where one feels that this entire world is false and unfair, and our existence doesn't matter to anyone. Like what the movie shows at the end, I just hope people can hit the boundary and exit the door as soon as possible. Once you are out, you are out.
Last but not least, you should keep your resolution. You will never know how strong you can be unless being strong is your only choice. Once you determine what to do, never lose faith in yourself. Truman feared of water before because his father was drowned to death when Truman was young. However, he knew probably taking a boat was the only way out. He challenged himself. When the storm came, he hanged on tight and never let go. Even at the moment he was about to get out, the director Christof was pretending to be his creator and trying to tempt him. He had the choice of living at the fake world, which he has nothing to worry about. He was told that if he went into the outside world and things would be different and no longer perfect. Fortunately he strengthened his conviction and stepped out. And I believe he would be reborn with a new start.
I strongly recommend watching this well-made movie not only for its enjoyable storyline but also the meaning hidden behind this movie.
