when we were kids 当我们正当少年 there was a strange house 有一座奇怪的房子 all the shades were 它所有的窗帘 always 总是 drawn 牢牢紧闭 and we never heard voices 我们从未听见 in there 那里传来过丝毫声音

and the yard was full of 院子里 bamboo 满是竹子 and we liked to play in 我们高兴在竹林中 the bamboo 玩耍 pretend we were 就好似 Tarzan 我们是人猿泰山的化身 (although there was no Jane).(虽然那儿没有珍妮)

and there was a 那里还有 fish pond 鱼塘 a large one 好大一片 full of the 满是 fattest goldfish 哪儿都见不着的 you ever saw 肥鼓鼓的金鱼 and they were 它们乖顺极了。 tame. they came to the 鱼儿们 surface of the water 浮出水面 and took pieces of 取走 bread 我们手中的 from our hands.面包。

Our parents had 我们的父母 told us: 告诉过我们: “never go near that “永远不要 house.” so, of course, 所以,理所当然地 we went. we wondered if anybody 我们好奇 liveed there. weeks went by and we 日月穿梭 never saw 我们 anybody.

then one day 然后有一天 we heard 我们听见了 a voice 来自那座房子的 from the house 声音 “YOU GOD DAMNED WHORE!” “贱货!” it was a man’s 是一个男人的 voice. 声音。

then the screen 接着 door 房子的门 of the house was 就 flung open 猛地开了 and the man 男人 walked 走了 out. he was holding a 他 fifth of whiskey 右手 in his right 吊着瓶 hand. he was about 大概 30. 30岁出头。 he had a cigar 嘴里 in his 嘬着根 mouth, 雪茄, needed a shave. his hair was 他的头 wild and 乱糟糟 and uncombed 像鸡窝 and he was 他还 barefoot 打赤脚 in undershirt 挂着背心 and pants.

but his eyes 但他的眼睛 were 如此 bright. they blazed 熠熠 with 有如燃烧的 brightness 星火 and he said, 他说, “hey, little “嘿, gentlemen, 小伙子们, having a good 过得可好呀?” time, I hope?” then he gave a 然后 little laugh 他笑了笑 and walked 又 back into the 走回 house.

we left, 我们走了, went back to my回 parents’ yard 我们父母的院子里 and thought 思考 about it. our parents, 我们认为, we decided, 我们的父母, had wanted us 要求我们 to stay away 远离 from there 那座房子 because they 因为 never wanted us 他们永远不想 to see a man 让我们看见 like 一个 that, 那样的男人, a strong natural 一个 man 有着 with 漂亮 beautiful 眼睛的 eyes. our parents 我们的父母 were ashamed 惭愧 that they were 他们自己 not 不像 like that 那个 man, 男人那样, that’s why they 所以他们 wanted us 让我们 to stay 离得 away.

but 但是 we went back 我们又回去了 to that house 那座 and the bamboo 有着竹林 and the tame 和温顺金鱼的 goldfish. we went back 我们回去了 many times 很多次 for many weeks 很多个星期 but we never 但我们再也 saw 看不见 or heard 听不到 the man 那个男人 again. the shades were 窗帘 down 一如既往地 as always 紧闭 and it was 寂静 quiet.

then one day 接着有一天 as we came back from 我们从学校 school 回来 we saw the 看见 house. it had burned 它 down, 被烧垮了, there was nothing 什么 left, 也不留, just a smouldering 仅存阴燃 twisted black 扭曲的黑色 foundation 地基 and we went to 我们走向 the fish pond 鱼塘 and there was 那儿 no water 里面没有 in it 水 and the fat 肥肥的 orange goldfish 橙色 were dead 金鱼 there, 死了, drying out.

we went back to 我们回 my parents’ yard 我们父母的院子里 and talked about 谈论 it 这件事 and decided that 我们认为, our parents had 我们的父母 burned their 烧毁了 house down, 他们的房子, had killed 杀死了 them 他们 had killed the 杀死了 goldfish 金鱼 because it was 因为他们 all too 全都 beautiful, 太漂亮了, even the bamboo 即便是 forest had 化成灰烬的 burned. they had been 父母 afraid of 害怕 the man with the 这个 beautiful 有着漂亮眼睛 eyes.

and 而 we were afraid 我们害怕 then 因为 that 这样 all throughout our lives 我们此后全部的人生 things like that 那样的事情 would 会 happen, 再次发生: that nobody 大家 wanted 都 anybody 不要 to be 那些 strong and 像那样 beautiful 强壮而漂亮 like that, 的人, that 那些 others would never 永远不被世人 allow it, 认可的人, and that 并且 many people 很多人 would have to 因此 die.
