Embracing LGBTQ+ Representation
This series has made me shamefully aware of my residual transphobia and, ironically, homophobia. Despite the fact that all the make-out scenes depicted were just kissing, I found myself constantly worrying about these characters being seen by their parents or unfriendly schoolmates, and the potential tension, judgment, and bullying that could follow. I was projecting doubts on behalf of the external pressure, which actually stemmed from my own unconscious biases.
It's highly understandable that Netflix is aiming to attract audiences by explicitly portraying more LGBTQ+ romance. However, it also serves as a poignant reminder of what an inclusive and supportive environment should look like. If we find ourselves uncomfortable with that portrayal, even in the slightest, it's a reflection of our own issues.
The most impactful line for me was when Charlie suggested to Nick that they leave the prom together because "it's like we forgot why we wanted to do it in the first place." It's simple and somewhat idealistic, yet it carries a powerful and inspiring message. No wonder this series is a hit, serving as both entertainment and a catalyst for important conversations.
