The film is full of powerless.
From the beginning of Maria pulling the bed sheets, to the middle of the bicycle was stolen, and finally is he has been catch by stolen a bicycle.
What it reflects is just reality, The life is like this, not so many miracles, and there are also not so many coincidences and accidents. But it is exactly the new realism film, which is the reappearance of life. And just because that is “LIFE”, add more tragic color in the film.
The actors are all been found on the street, the “father” is actually a unemployed man, They act extremely well.
The design of “son” is really really indispensable in the film, he made the connotation of the film enricher a lot, They are a very harmonies father and son, we can see from the rubbing bicycle sense, that bicycle is also very important to the son. They were always trying to find it, but when the ordeal of life reached a peak, the father's moral bottom line collapsed. He became to a person that he hates, stolen someone’s bicycle for life. The final sense of the film is very meaningful, son holds his father’s hand, and the father became a weak man at this time—— in the moral sense of ought and should. When the father was beaten by some passers-by, he was staring at his son all the time, he don’t want his son to see him like that,he want to protect his final dignity in front of his son. That is too sad and helpless.
This is the representative work of Italian new realism, it is full of care for the people at the bottom after WWII. It is touching but not sensational, The story is really simple, but it really touching me.
