Families might not be the greastest company to hang out with, but if bad things happen to them, it would crush us the greastest.
When i watched the first episode, every one in the show was so depressed as if they all had this overpowering anger and would lose control all at once. Ruth, the mother, a control freak who seemed always sad and angry but loved her children dearly. I feel sorry for her cause she spent her entire life doing things for others. And i guess that's what most of Moms do, making sacrifices all the time. Nate, the oldest son and the most unpredictable one. Sometimes i think he was kind, ideal, constantly aware of his health conditions. Most of the times he seemd vulnerable, annoying, and susceptible to tempertation. Even the night before he died, he had an adultery and showed no remorse at all. David, the second oldest son, a control freak in the beginning but later on turned out to be a very loving, caring, sensitive person. He is my favorite. I loved how he opend up to keith, his partner and how he was defending for his foster boys when Keith was trying to throw them out. Clair, the youngest daughter, a talented artist who hated everything in the first beginning and dated bunch of jerks, like drug addicts, biosexual, insane. Finnally he met a normal guy who was taking her keys away in order to prevent her from driving drunk and left a voice message in her answering machine saying that you are too smart, you are too good, don't waste that. Brenda, Nate's wife, extremly smart. In the first beginning, she was very cool but distant from every deep relationship. Besides, she has to take care of sick brother who basically lived with her all day long. Later on, when she was committed to Nate, she was like having this dramatic change all of sudden. She became very caring, sensitive and even forgiving. But one thing that puts me off is her relationship with her brother Billy.
To be honest, after watching so many American dramas, i actually didn't have any clue about their religions and values. Most of the time i didn't connect to them. But i could easily connect to this one. There were several scenes that always touched me. Whenver the kids came home, the first thing that Ruth did was to make a quick meal for them. No matter how Nate Clair or David pissed off each other, they always found a way to make peace with each other. When Nate died, David couldn't get off the car and read the poem to him. When Nate died, Ruth tried her best to take care of his little girl Maya and had a mental breakdown seeing her favorite monkey.
