“Our films have everything: love, despair, sorrow, laughter, day and night”, Battu’s young assistant cries through his megaphone to attract the villagers to the cinema. Battu operates one of two thousand mobile cinemas in India. His bioscope is a colorful truck, equipped with an old Soviet projector, several bedsheets, and kilometers of celluloid. Aboard this truck he travels with his loyal helper, Mema, a lively elderly man, and Amit, his young assistant, to screen films in remote villages. The film follows the three on their trek from Kolkata through fishing villages and snake-hunters’ settlements, to the remote region of Orissa, where Battu hopes to fulfill his dream—to screen a film for an audience that does not even know what cinema is. Will they want to find out?
