It seems to be left up to the viewer to interpret. Given the context of the film and the fact that Aisling is essentially a pagan deity I'd say that the scene is representative of Ireland's transition from the old ways to Christianity. The point of them working together and becoming friends (when Brendan was a child) was to illustrate that many Christian rituals/practices were co-opted from older Pagan traditions. After all, if your going to convert an entire people you can't just tell them that everything they believe in is garbage: some of the monks took Pagan folklore and applied Jesus and Christian ideas to them so that it would be easier to convert people. Without Aisling (Pagan beliefs), Brendan (voice of Christianity) could never have completed the book. The book's completion could represent Ireland's successful conversion, which would make Pagan beliefs invalid. This is illustrated by the fact that he can no longer speak to Aisling: her time has passed.
All interpretation of course, and your free to come up with your own theory.
