REVIEW
With a healthy dose of autobiography, here is prolific director Todd Verow's (Vacationland) latest sexy outing. Cute, small-town Joe (Tim Swain) goes off to study at a prestigious New England arts college. He makes fast friends with freewheeling Jennifer (Julia Frey), who also struggles with the high cost of living, and beyond work-study employment they resort to less orthodox methods of paying the bills, including petty larceny. Enter Ramon (Gil Bar-Sera), an enigmatic, punky hustler who inspires Joe to give prostitution a whirl -- and sparks a crush while he’s at it.
Sex, drugs, rich kids, music, sketching, nude models and queer discovery -- this is one true art school confidential. In crafting Between Something & Nothing, Verow drew from his own experiences as student -- and yes, rent boy -- at Rhode Island School of Design.
