“It has left a great impression on me that the responsibility for what will happen to the people and the country, if the German demands are rejected, is put on me. It's a heavy responsibility. So heavy that I dread to bear it.
It's the Government that has the decision, but my position is clear: I can not accept the German demands. It would be contrary to everything i think is my duty as a King since I arrived to this country almost 35 years ago. I can not cross that line. I don't want to cross that line. I don't want this to be the deciding factor for the Government. But I have carefully tested myself and weighted my position. And I can not name Quisling that I know not to have any support from the people.
Should the Government decide to accept the German demands, and I totally understand the reasons to do so in view of the imminent danger in which we are in, and because of the large number of young Norwegians that will have to sacrifice their lives in the fight. Should you choose to accept these demands, then there is no other way for me but to abdicate for me and for my house.”
