rewriting it until it was up to his amazing standard. Then the producer f-cked him over (big surprise), had the story changed around, and the film was given over to Robert Aldrich. While the film is fine as it is, I think Peckinpah would have really made it something special (and the much lauded final fight would have probably been twice as good).
