It's 1993 and big-time '80s teen stars Molly Ringwald and Patrick Dempsey are now adults looking for their new niche in Hollywood. Ringwald famously passed on starring in "Pretty Woman" and "Ghost", and perhaps as a result hasn't starred in anything but a TV movie for the past 3 years. Dempsey tried his hand at a new sort of Brat Pack with Slater and Grieco in "Mobsters" but it didn't take, nor did doing action thrillers (anyone ever seen "Run" with Kelly Preston?). In a fit of desperation, someone's agent must have suggested going back to the well for an old-fashioned rom-com, a zesty screwball love affair with some newfound maturity for their languishing celebrity, a safe bet starring the girl from "Pretty in Pink" and the guy from "Can't Buy Me Love". Audiences will love to see them doing all that again, and together at last!
This movie doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. I've only encountered that nadir of obscurity maybe once or twice in the thousands of movies I've seen over the past many years since Wikipedia arrived and became a more convenient, less chaotic IMDB. Not sure why it doesn't, though. It's not hard to find anymore (watched it on Amazon Prime). It's not a ghastly train wreck that everyone wishes they could bury (it's an adequate if unimpressive slice of genre goods that flirts with actual wit and passion but never quite takes off on flights of either, whose biggest crime is probably that it was patched together somewhat messily in the editing bay; regarding the two of them, this movie stands as the last respectable starring role that Ringwald ever got before sinking into erotic thrillers and nostalgic has-been cameos, while Dempsey was subsequently demoted to 5th banana in ensembles like "With Honors" and "Outbreak" before bottoming out in the late '90s, but he at least had a comeback in 2000 with a sudden influx of more prominent parts in talked-about stuff that eventually lead to his residency on "Grey's Anatomy").
This is a "finding their way back to each other" romantic comedy, in which we glimpse a whirlwind romance that ends in contrived divorce during the opening 5 minutes, and then wait for them to reunite through 90 minutes of a plot bending over backwards to force them back together. They're a former songwriting duo in France hired to come up with a hit tune for a new movie, so they reluctantly reunite to work on it at the rustic estate of Dempsey's new fiance (Lysette Anthony) on the weekend of their wedding. Love triangle madness ensues. It's basically that (way better, underrated) Hugh Grant/Drew Barrymore movie "Music & Lyrics" crossed with Dempsey's own "Sweet Home Alabama" (only this was back when he was still considered cool enough to be the lead instead of the Wrong Man).
Like I said, it has its moments. It's not completely average. They're both still pretty charming in a way, him with his sly grin, her with that porcelain face; it's just that the innocence has wore off a bit, making her seem more stringent and whiny than she used to be (or maybe she was exactly that way in the '80s but the writing made up for it?) and making him seem more like a selfish douche bag. Lysette Anthony is supposed to be the antagonist standing between them, but I just felt bad for her the whole time, the way Dempsey and Ringwald treat her so callously on their path of very little resistance to hooking up again.
But ultimately it's all predictable cliches, re-packaged with a dash of flair, not enough to re-heat their careers at the time or demand mass rediscovery here in 2019. See it if you like either of these two or enjoy watching mainstream movies that for whatever reason have fallen off the face of the earth.
Oh and Ringwald's the singer in this songwriting pair, and performs a few songs of her own during the movie. She's pretty decent at it. The song they finally end up writing (spoilers, they complete the task) is a syrupy love ballad, but I can imagine it playing often on soft rock radio back in those days, if the movie hadn't been banished to the Phantom Zone.
