At the beginning of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”, the director Francis Ford Coppola controlled lighting to set a dark battleground scene which consisted of both red and black colors representing blood and people’s ruthlessness. People behind the scenes casting shadows who took lances, bows,s, and arrows to fight with each other. Therefore, the atmosphere for this scene is cruel and bloody with quick movements. Also, another scene is one couple where Jonathan and Mina are kissing. The background of them is a colorful garden. There are white, green, and blue. Compared with the battleground scene, this scene is warm and comfortable with a romantic atmosphere. The props of this scene are some plants that have a natural and lovely atmosphere.
Another theme of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” is gender and class. First of all, Mina found out Lucy was sleepwalking one night which means she lacks control. Lucy became a devoted disciple and recruited followers. This situation demonstrates women gave up their beliefs and catered to others easily in the nineteenth century. After Lucy turned to become a vampire, three men Dr.Seward, Arthur, and Quincey Morris stop their adoration of Lucy. It shows that they do not like Lucy deeply but Lucy's innocence. Then, when Lucy became a Dracula, Arthur used a stake to give Lucy peace because he thinks death is better than living with inappropriate behavior. He did not ask Lucy about her opinion so it means he believed he had the right to end her life. To conclude, women had a disadvantaged status even though Lucy is upper class in society. Women in the nineteenth century did not stand out for their feelings and beliefs. Women belong to men’s accessories instead of being themselves.
Lastly, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” discusses human behavior. The film introduced us to godlessness and corruption that led one person to become an evil personification. However, it points out that love has the same power as God's belief because love can release the powers of darkness at the end of the film. Also, loving is stronger than the fear of death.
