The poems in The Kindergarten Teacher were written by Kaveh Akbar and Ocean Vuong. They’re just elementary enough in their language to be plausible as the work of a child prodigy, but they’re also too spiritually perceptive to have been written by a kid—which only serves the movie’s underlying point. Peppering the script just so, the poems give Colangelo wide latitude to create a portrait of a woman whose frustrations with herself and the world are manifest in complicated, hurtful, imminently watchable ways. The movie is subtly disconcerting from the jump. You may want to watch it through your fingers at times—but that would require taking your eyes off of Gyllenhaal. Per usual, she makes that impossible.
