"I'm crazy about animation and artificial movements. Currently the popular animation that people see is mainly there for children. I just thought that it would be nice to have animation for adults, and children as well. Rather than 'action, action, action', I wanted to make something that was heartbreaking, very warm and gentle.
When I started thinking about Birthday Boy, I based the concept on my childhood story. That came out very strongly, living in Australia and looking at westernised kids getting birthday presents, the material items. Making toys by hand, it's all my childhood experience.
"Set in 1951, during the Korean War, Birthday Boy is the story of Manuk, who lives in a small village and plays at being a soldier like his father. I animated Manuk by filming a real six year old boy and studying his movements.
"I had to look at him over and over again and see what he does when his back is itchy, that sort of thing. So I had to find a little boy's mannerisms and make it clear in my animation that this is a little boy.
"First I drew the storyboard and asked the little boy to act like the scenes shown in the storyboard. Then I modelled everything in 3D, which took the longest time in the process. Then I had to paint all Manuk's clothes and his face on the computer, things like the dirt under his fingernails and the smudge of dirt when he wipes his nose.
"I painted all those textures in Photoshop, then retouched and changed a lot as I went. Then I put everything in the scene. I had a very talented matte painter and he touched up the background, bringing out more details.
"Then, it was time for the lighting. When I had drawn the storyboards, I had included shadows, and I wanted to get the CG lights to reproduce those shadows exactly. I talked to Ian Brown, who lectures at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and he volunteered his time for that daunting task.
"Compositing at the end was done by Mike Daly, a very talented ex-student of AFTRS who has made several animation films.
"I did a lot of work right through the production, but at the end I had to have the help of other people. These people donated their time simply because they loved 'Birthday Boy', and it shows.
"I hope that people rich or poor can watch this film and feel something human. That is what I aimed to do."

这动画可不是什么heartbreaking, very warm and gentle.倒像是mindbroken, very boring and dull 给大人看太慢 给小朋友又看不懂。。。
我觉得还满gentle的
