After six years, I have watched this movie again. The first time, at the age of fourteen, I just read it as a love story, without something impressive.
In fact, the main thread is actually clear, about Elizabeth and Darcy’s love. Elizabeth is independent and humorous, she like to control her own life, but at first, Elizabeth regards Mr. Darcy as a proud and arrogant man, then she changes her view and falls in love with Mr. Darcy. In the recent days, I also have read the original novel and get some new ideas. I really appreciate Elizabeth for her charming personality.
At the beginning of the novel, there is a sentence: ”It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife.” It is a reflection of perspectives of that age, especially Mrs. Bonnet is always considering. It shows the background of that age, fortune is an important standard to judge one person. However, in our society, it can’t be judged as a wrong idea.
When Elizabeth reconsiders the possible marriage between her and Mr. Darcy, she thinks as follows:
He seemed to be exactly the man who would have suited her. They could have usefully influenced each other. His mind might have been softened and his manners improved by her sociability, and she might have learnt from his greater judgement and knowledge of the world.
When I read it, I completely agree with it. In an accomplished relationship, each side just experienced studying process; we all tell love can people become better. In the story, as the views of Elizabeth have changed, the attitude of Darcy has changed. He becomes more and more gentle and modest. It is also the theory, and of course, you must deal with the distinctions and become more inclusive in the relationship. If we can say Elizabeth’s change is about ideas, then Mr. Darcy’s change is more material , about personality.
Elizabeth is always the person who asks “let me find my own husband”. Elizabeth is always speaking out her own voice, she doesn’t choose to marry by the arrangement from her mother. However, think further, why Mrs. Bennet is so worried about her daughters’ marriages, because without Mr. Bonnet, they would be able to support themselves. Remember in the movie, there is just a sentence like that, when Mrs. Bonnet is faced with Elizabeth’s remark, she says “When you have five daughters, you would know. “Just this meaning, I see behind Mrs. Bonnet vanity, it is the worry and consideration from a mother, when fortune and power is universally acknowledged able to decide a person’s position.
I like this movie, not only because of its story, but also its scene. We can see beautiful scenery in English countryside and understand squire culture, which attract me very much.
I think, in the novel, the concept about knowing a person not only applies to a relationship, but also applies to all social relationships. We can’t judge a person when we are not knowing him. Everyone has his own experience and stories. So if we want to understand one person overall, we first understand his circumstance and background. Don’t be trapped in the first impression. In today’s marriage, we all can see the phenomenon also exists, and it is inheriting in people’s mind.
