This story is just simple. Mr. Keating is a creative teacher. He teaches students not only the knowledge of poetry but also creativity. Even though in the system of rigid patterns, Mr. Keating still sticks to his theory. Yes, my caption. No doubt that it’s so lucky that these students can meet Mr. Keating. Of course, Nile’s death is a tragedy, but I think the pursuit for the deep down will not stop. What Mr. Keating brought them are about freedom, courage, dreams and creativity. These will be priceless treasure, which will benefit them in there life. In fact, in our teen age, we have no mature ideas and are easily influenced by others. I will never forget this scene. When finally Mr. Keating was going to leave, some of the students stand on the desk, saying “my captain” out and showed their gratitude to Mr. Keating. Yes, our society need them, and these teenagers have their own independent personality and free thinking. It touched me. They are the future.
Now, in our view, it’s acknowledged that Mr. Keating is right .Yes, everyone must pursue independent characteristic, not always following others mind, not thinking nothing about the society. Everyone is different from others, everyone should have his own thoughts and own life. In modern education, we appeal to creativity more and more. But just think about Chinese education. Some people always complain about it .Yeah, it’s true that Chinese education have lots of problems, but just think about this. Can we cancel college entrance examination? Can we learn totally from some western country to reform our education systems? I think the answer is “no”, because we are facing different education. If we don’t have college entrance examination, how we decide which teenagers can get advanced education? How can we ensure educational equality?
Compared to the difficulty in education equity, it’s harder to change nature and economic inequalities. So at least in my opinion, education equality is vital to society equality, college entrance examination is vital to education equality. I stand for college entrance examination; it doesn’t mean we don’t need some education dynamic just like “Mr. Keating”. In the past years, Chinese government has launched quality education. Yes, we can see our government’s progress. But, we find that there is little progress, because in the major system, it turned into formalism. So I think we must carry out.
But in a test-oriented education, maybe it’s not wise to apply the Mr. Keating’s methods, because its resistance will go beyond its progress and finally hinder progress. Maybe he can use some methods just like conveying new concepts from original poetry. Help students, first understand, second organize in his control then direct and explore. Just like Nile, it’s great to encourage people what he want to do, and absolutely this will benefit their life. But he should have full understanding Nile’s situation, when he realize that there is minimal possibility that Nile’s father agree it. Maybe what he should do is help him go into a proper perspective. If he can’t achieve his acting dreams now, maybe he can change a way. In his school life ,he can learn more knowledge about acting, and then when he grow older, we can continue our dreams and I think in that time, he will have more acting knowledge and he have the independence to choose what he want. We are not giving up what we want, we are just changing a way to struggle for our dreams. This way won’t hurt one who loves us, this way won’t bring more difficulties or opposition for us. So we should choose different methods according to the condition of a student.
So I appreciate Mr. Keating’s theory and acts, but I don’t agree with him completely. I appeal to the real quality education and education reform, but I also stand for college entrance education.
