Stripes of silver step brinks reflecting the light of moon
Max stroking his trumpet. Willing to sell it. Stroke his treasured memories on the ship.
He is a sensitive guy with talent and passion. Now having left the Ocean City, he lost sth.
“You are never really done for as long as you’ve got a good story.”
Music of gods.
The collision between the light blue of sky and ocean, and the black of Virginian’s crust.
Everyone in the ship waving their hats pointing their fingers towards America. While 1900 is afraid of the Endless of it.
Some of the scene transition is preceded by a melody of trumpet.
“The horn is my whole life.” Music is the whole life of both Max and 1900. That’s why they listen to each other ’s music as well as heart whispers.
In the Max Selling trumpet scene, the imperfect record, “it doesn’t have a name” and “it’s my secret” echo each other in front and behind.
Danny Boodman T.D Lemon 1900, an unusual name born in an unusual era leads to an unusual life.
A fucking cutie little boy!!
When he got a chance to be sent to a orphanage on land, he hided away in the ship and when he came back to people’s horizon again, he brought his amazing music and a “Fuck the regulations”. Taking the following “Fuck Jazz” into consideration, this is a philosophy of life for 1900, free from moral limitations of human beings’ world.
In the musical instrument shop, Max embraced the familiar piano like his own baby, which is his memories as well as his belief. When he heard the news that Virginian was going to be destroyed, his eyeballs trembled with the broken notes playing. From a certain stand, 1900 is a god, who had never been on the land, never made a human being choice nor held back by human being regulations.
In the following scene, the old ship awaiting her retirement draws a sharp contradiction with when she was young and beautiful. The huge lamp previously hanging from the ceiling of ball parquet is now carried down from the ship. And then in the memory of Max, we can clearly see the colorful ribbons decorating Virginian and horses boarding the ship.
The piano waltz scene in the golden parquet is fantastic! It’s a dance between god appearing in the world and ocean! It’s all about music floating in the raging ocean and piano keys dancing with storm! And you can describe how cute it is when 1900 smiles while acknowledging Max with fingers still dancing on keys. Just like what he looked like when he was a 6-year-old kid. As a matter of fact, god is a little boy, isn’t he?
In 1990’s cabin scene, we can see a lot of photos on the wall. A detail is interesting that 1900 once played together with the outstanding Einstein!
And I love the moonlight piano shot.
The conversation between 1900 and the northern Italy man is implicitly subtle. They are both caught in a ship to a degree. The man suffered from a disastrous experience and decided to “change life and start a fresh”, and 1900 was caught in deep thought hearing the words. He didn’t know if it was time for him to get off and see what a lifestyle “land people” live. Eventually, he chose a different way from the Italian’s starting a fresh.
Jim Roth’s typical naughty expression.
He always put “ the end of the line” during the band’s playing. Actually he had never got inside any line set by our land people. So his naught funny face always reflects a 6-year-old kid’s heart.
The land, the city and the artificial lights are all background for 1900, who always walks only on a single street belonging to him. It’s the loneliest time for him when the ship rests in the harbor. His loneliness decreases only when he throws himself back to ocean.
影史逼王(only Chinese can describe this manner)
Jelly Roll Morton is in fact a white man in the history while in the movie he is starred by a black actor with great dignity and solemnity.
The film is expert at detail manipulations. The piano duel is curved by director with the change of the eyebrows of the violinist, the artificial hair of the old lady, the butt fell into the pants of the stunned audience man and the paper eaten by Max.
There is always a girl in a story.
While the girl didn’t rescue 1900 from his own isolate island. The girl didn’t see through the window and catch the gorgeous pianist when she got aboard. Later she didn’t raise her head and passed by a lover admiring her. Then in the rain on the deck she first noticed him, while their face-to-face time was intervened by a flock of people exactly when 1900 was to speak.
He secretly kissed her as she was sleeping, impressed by her beautiful lips and eyes. This is the true beauty thing in the world. 1900 lived for the beautiful throughout his short life. He is obsessed by music, and caught by the uncommon young lady. He chose the eternal beauty and give up all the ugly thing usual land people would meet with. He is actually God.
A piece of Por Una Cabeza for you! Step forward idiot!
This is a choice regarding Leave or Stay in the face of him.
To leave is for the dreaming girl, for a glance of the ocean from the land and “start a fresh” from the girl’s father. To stay is for his eternal music, though I am sure that he could definitely not find his previous happiness. He is internally a man of out of line, which is shaped by his unique experience. When he stood on the gangplank, what sticked before his eyes were millions of possibilities, endless lines and regulations. He finally chose God’s choice, which is the limited 88 keys. And his flying hat chose to land on the sea water instead of land.
"Land? Land is a ship too big for me. It’s a woman too beautiful. A voyage too long. Perfume too strong. It’s a music I don’t know how to ma
This is another fantastic shot. With light shedding from the top two people sit either side of the screen, divided by the oblique ladder. At this moment I finally know a bit more about why 1900 felt hard to get off the boat. Take our ordinary people living on the land. For us the earth is finite with four oceans and seven continents. At this circumstance if you are required to move your ass and live in the universal space with a subversively different lifestyle, could you please simply endorse your transition? Can you live with a “world” with no end? Can you live with a helmet always on your head providing oxygen? Can you suffer the infinite dim and loneliness? Sorry it’s at least too hard for me. Like 1900, we live in a boat too, which is just a little bit larger than his. And we can’t afford to get off.
Lover’s perspective? No offense. It’s just much too classic.
Do you pay attention to the corner of 1900’s mouth upward when he heard roaring of the death?
Do you feel your heart broken when Virginian broke?
