Film “The Legend of 1900”
It was a story of a famous pianist at the beginning of 20 century. The main character was named 1900 who was proficient in playing piano. He was a genius and very popular during that period. He was an idealist. He played both for up-class people and ordinary people. His music elated all audiences. However, he just played piano on the steamship and never got off the ship. He was born and finally died with the steamship.
It is a narrative film, combined with two clues. In the film, there was always a guy showed up. He was just a guide who led audiences to get into the story of the leading actor. Therefore, the movie was presenting the real world of the story teller’s living world and his story about “1900” by montage at the same time. By the way, the montage means scenes were always switched between real world and the story’s world in order to provide a feel that the leading actor’s story truly was a legend. Montage presented the topic of “legend” well, and also presented the topic which director wanted to show—the ideology in that period tended to idealism. Because of the American Dream and the Gold Rush, so many people were dreaming and eagerly expecting their new life in the new land. That’s how the idealism came out. Although the story of 1900 was probably not true, frequently switched scenes made audience fell the story was true and also helped audiences understand easily about the ideology of that period. The feeling of shuttle in different time and space made audiences to feel the world of 1900’s living was sublimate; people of 20 century were idealist. Montage made audiences feel the story was like a legend; in fact people of that period thirsted for legendary life more than real life. At the beginning of 20 century, people gaped after freedom, wealth and power; and this ideology was presented by the movie well.
The movie also used Semiotics theory which symbolized the nature of the film by some signs. There were two signs could prove the ideology of what the movie wanted to show. The first one is The Statue of Liberty and “America” which was called by passengers who wanted to migrate to America. These happened several times in the film. They are symbols of freedom and idealism which people thirsted for so much. Besides, jazz, which was playing all over the film, was also the symbol of happiness and freedom. In the movie, there are always exciting, comfortable but sometimes sentimental sounds of jazz, which symbolize the world of beginning of 20 century—people thirst for happiness, but they always suffer their life.
In short, the director of “The Legend of 1900” used Montage and Semiotics to show the ideology of the beginning of 20 century, and showed audiences a story about how idealism died during that unstable period.
