After watching most audience are greatly moved and clap hands for McMurphy. It seems that they are all so-called virtuous people, who are born to be kind-hearted, who are good to naughty guys, who fight for freedom, who respect perspectives, and so on.
Actually, it does not conform to the essence of the society.
Who is McMurphy in our real life?
He is the guy who steals your new-bought bike.
He is the guy who flirts with your girlfriend in the pub.
He is the guy who sits on your apple tree and picks away all your apples.
And yes, he is just such a guy who always makes you so furious that you even want to lift your fists.
Now, there is what I want to say.Compared with freedom, we normal people prefer safety, while the safest position is being with the majority.Apparently, McMurphy is not one of the majority, and because of his specialty, he breaks the rule of our old games. Then, to keep all things undisturbed, we choose to put him into the walls, forget everything done to him and continue our normal life.
In my opinion, the smartest point of human beings is that we know how to find a good position and can always get a best one. When McMurphy's laughings and senses are dying out after being tortured by those high walls and rigid rules, we become his close friends and supporters, even try to plan a prison break for him.Surprisingly, we call him hero now, no longer a trouble maker.
Isn't it ironic?
Nurse Rachel is the opposite.Obviously, she is a total rationalist who sticks to her principles and does only right things. If McMurphy's rebellion is a reflection of ourselves, so does Rachel's principles, or more directly, those principles are exactly what are pursuing for nowadays. However, in the end of this movie, she is marked as a stubborn and cold-hearted woman as a result of our strange sympathy to McMurphy. In fact, when we think we have obtained the truth and refuse to see deeply into other different lifestyles, we are doing the same things as Rachel. In this condition, those so-called bad guys, mad or crazy people, trouble makers, are they really such guys as you call them?Is it possible that they are just other McMurphys?
Of course, this is a point we can only reach, but cannot change.Yet many people even don't want to reach that point. In other words, they are satisfied when thought to be victims, but feel hurt when there is a possibility that they are the opposite ones.
I don't want to judge the essence of creatures because I personally believe that neither "good" nor "evil" is 100% pure.Anyone who wants to purify humanity has a monster living inside, even if he lifts a flag called freedom. After all, one cannot be honored without facing his own flaws on the way to freedom.
So, why would freedom become a tragedy?
Because YOU are the key to the door.
