An Exemplar of the So-Called Provincial Life
In the midst of watching this movie, I thought to myself:" there must be a lot of people who are just hating Thérèse's guts right now for acting like such a heartlessly indifferent bitch to her saint-like husband and family."
While I definitely count myself as one of those people, I also resonate so much with Thérèse. You know, some birds are simply not meant to be caged, as Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption would say. But Thérèse who's such an obvious existentialist has been hunted down, straggled, and suffocated to death time after time in her "idyllic" home setting.
James Joyce, Ezra Pound and a great number of other modernist writers and artists have been misunderstood a lot because of their preference for the cosmopolitan life. People think that it is their greed and vanity that propelled them to chase after the fame, the monetary success and the fun etc. Yet like Thérèse, they simply want to live life as it is, to truly exist and to embrace the good and bad of this world.
Cities- a network of entities that have been blamed for causing environmental pollution,crimes and endless human miseries are also the indispensable gruel for the soul. "Let every emotion become an intoxication", what Thérèse and some of us non-settlers for the so-called peaceful calm provincial life want is simply to plunge into the world and then to live, to exist.
