L'Auberge Espagnole
Finally saw this movie yesterday. It was not bad, a very light French Comedy. I don't know why they put Audrey Tautou's big picture at the cover of the DVD though, cuz she's hardly in the movie. The main character is Xavier (played by Romain Duris); this is a story of his adventure in a foreign country, about the people he met, and the things he saw.
Xavier can hardly be called a "good" guy: he treats his mother and girlfriend badly, cheats with a married woman, and betrays a friend who gave him a roof over his head when he's homeless. However, it's the imperfection of Xavier's character that defines this story. If he did not go through what he did, he would not have found out what kind of person he wants to become.
Because of the different nationalities that resides in Xavier's apartment, lots of funny things happened. I laughed out loud many times just by watching how they all behave with each other, reminds me of my college days. I especially liked the part when all the roomates are rushing home at the same time to stop one of their roommates' boyfriend from entering the apartment. It was hilarious. :)
I really liked the movie. However, I feel that the movie has way more characters than it could handle, and I wish that it would've had the chance to explore every single one of them. I want to know more about the Danish guy and how he got his ex pregnant, I want to know about the pot-smoking Italian and why he's the way he is, I want to know about Anne-Sophe and why she stuck with a husband who treats her badly, and I want to know how Martine turns out... The movie ended with way too many questions left unanswered.
That's why I can't wait to see the sequel now. When is <<Les Poupees Russes>> going to be opened in the States? :(
