if you're into rich visual effects and mysteries you'd love this film.
i first watched this film in Hong Kong Film Festival years ago (called 奪面解碼 in Chinese), it was one of those highlighted items.
i was immediately blown away by the then very advanced vfx - in fact, watching it again recently, i'm surprised the effects and filming techniques used in the film are not outdated at all! it might not be as sophisticated as Matrix but it's far more poetic. Many of the shots could be easily made into nice posters/postcards.
i rate this a five-star film not because i think it's outstanding in all aspect, but simply because:
[1] you might of guessed the killer's identity but at least this is a film you can watch and be a Sherlock Holmes along the way, and pretend you are replacing the detective (dead within few minutes the film begins)
[2] of course, brilliant vfx, even the credits in the beginning is very creative - it basically lays out the whole background of the film nicely, saving those typical people-recalling-the-past-to-give-info-you-as-audience-need kind of storytelling bore.
